Self-Determination: What can we Learn from Persons with Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities?

Self-determination is often equated with independence and individual choices, which limits its relevance for persons profound intellectual multiple disabilities (PIMD) due to their dependency. This paper challenges the notion of by arguing a rethinking self-determination that sensitive lives characterised dependency non-verbal being. An ethnographic study informed phenomenology emphasising embodiment shed light on how can unfold in PIMD relationships professionals. These data are engaged theoretical discussion, dialoguing theories ethics care. We advocate involving embodied communication, partnership ongoing processes being understood offer sound way grasping phenomenon self-determination, both without PIMD.
